Single vision lenses

Single Vision Resin Lens

Single vision refers to lenses that have one focal range only as they correct for a single viewing distance rather than for two or three different distances. Available in either a plus or minus form, single vision lenses are generally made for either distance, intermediate or near use and can be spherical or aspheric in design.

At Ridings Opticians we stock a wide range of single vision lenses including ultra thin, thin, super thin, extra thin and standard lenses.
To ensure that you are getting the perfect lenses, we also offer a number of extras including:

UV – as UV rays are harmful and can damage your eyes, a UV filter is highly recommended for all types of eyewear. At Ridings Opticians, all our sunwear lenses block out UV light in even the most extreme conditions so you can step outside with the utmost confidence.

Tint – From fashion to sport lenses, we have a full range of sunglass tints available. Whether you are looking to compliment your style or get that competitive edge, we have everything you need to complete your style.

Graduated – With only half or two thirds of the lens being tinted, graduated tint lenses offer a slightly more subtle look that can be used to emphasise the wearer’s eyes to their best advantage.

Bifocal lenses

Designed with two corrective lenses on each side of a pair of glasses, bifocal lenses are designed for people who need both near and farsighted vision correction.

Varifocal lenses

Due to their ability to allow clear vision at any distance by positioning the head and eyes correctly, varifocal lenses (progressive power lenses) are often described as the closest thing to natural vision. Providing the wearer with three fields of vision – distance, intermediate and near, these lenses replace the need to have potentially three different pairs of spectacles.

Available in a hard and soft design, varifocals are highly recommended for people who require sharp vision at a variety of distances or who are new to glasses because wearers find that they adapt to them very quickly.

At Ridings Opticians we mainly use Essilor Varilux lenses, the leaders in varifocal design. They offer a range of varifocal lens designs to suit all needs and budgets, we can discuss your requirements with you before recommending a particular lens.

Lens Coatings

Scratch resistant

Transitions lenses protect your eyes by blocking 100% of UV rays all of the time. This latest photochromic lens technology reacts to varying light conditions and therefore provides darker and clearer lenses where appropriate. Transitions lenses perform as everyday clear lenses indoors. Outdoors, they do more, continuously filtering the light, reducing glare and eye fatigue. They adapt to changing light conditions, bringing out the best in everything you see. This type of lens is ideal for people with an active outdoor lifestyle or those with light sensitive eyes.

UV protection

All our sunglasses and transition lenses have full UV protection as standard.

Light from the sun contains a spectrum of wavelengths.  We can only see light over a small range known as the visible spectrum but cannot see the infra-red and ultraviolet (UV) light outside the visible spectrum.  There is good evidence that excessive exposure to UV light can damage the eyes in particular, a small part of the retina called the Macula.  Too much UV can also make the lens in the eye go hazy – a condition known as cataract.  A special coating can be applied to spectacle lenses which helps to block the UV light providing extra protection for your eyes.

Anti reflection

Reflections from lenses make them more noticeable.  Internal refractions within the lens can result in distracting reflections and “ghosting”.  These are particularly noticeable in bright sunshine or driving at night.  Also, bright objects behind you can be reflected back into your eye creating a distracting double image.  These reflections can be reduced by applying a special anti-reflection coating to the lens.  This not only makes the lenses look more transparent but also helps to get rid of distracting reflections.  It can also be beneficial when driving, particularly at night.

High-index and aspheric lenses

If you need high-powered lenses you can improve the weight or appearance of your glasses with special lens materials and designs. High-index materials and aspheric designs mean that lenses can now be made thinner, lighter and better looking than traditional lens types. High-index materials make lenses for short sight thinner, while aspheric designs that minimise the amount of material making lenses for long sight both thinner and lighter.
